A colleague let me see this handsome certificate which his grandfather received from the regional Band of Hope Union in Yorkshire for attending and writing a report on a temperance lecture – the Yorkshire Rose is prominent, of course! I have seen many of these from around the country, but it’s always special to talk to a descendant about the subsequent life of, in this case, young W. Lucas of Middlesborough.
It came at an auspicious time, as I’m working at present on the teaching of ‘Scientific Temperance,’ tracing the thousands of volunteers who went into schools to offer these lessons linking temperance to biology, hygiene and citizenship, and its eventual adoption as part of the early 20th century national curriculum. Will be giving papers on this at various conferences in the UK and on the Continent this year, before it forms a chapter of the ongoing Band of Hope book.
Anyone out there have similar certificates, or family stories?
