Band of Hope Evening at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Last night, as a fringe event at the ‘Under Control’ Conference, biennial international meeting of the Society for the History of Alcohol and Drugs, delegates attended a Band of Hope meeting – in a re-creation. Readings, songs, action recitations and community singing introduced the ‘boys and girls’ to the temperance world of 1903. All material was authentic, and many of the audience commented that not only had it brought the material to life, and given new historical insight, but been very enjoyable! Performers were Drs. Annemarie McAllister, James Nicholls and James Kneale. Unfortunately the temperance beverages provided were not quite as popular.
